Low-code can replace “traditional” coding in a matter of months
New research has shown that the development of low-code may soon lead to the collapse of the more “traditional” forms of surgery.
Mendix’s Low-Code Status Report for 2022 showed an increase in low-code use from 77% in 2021 to 94% this year, with four out of ten companies now using it for mission-critical solutions in their business operations.
The report cites Gartner’s prediction that low-code or no-code applications will have 70% by 2025, up from 25% in 2020.
Should I use low code?
Mendix outlined several low-code advantages, many of which were most noticeable at the height of the pandemic.
As business halted and economies froze, many companies faced extremely difficult decisions. One in nine companies surveyed said that if they had not adopted a low-code, they would have had to deal with reputational damage or look at cost containment measures such as price increases or loss of personnel.
As such, 69% have not seen code evolve from crisis technology to a core technology that they intend to integrate with their companies to gain more control over things like costs. Key areas for low-code include IT, manufacturing engineering, product design, and quality control.
In addition to the low-code adoption by fintech and insurtech, public sector entities also employ this technology. Mendix research indicates that “improved, centralized, and standardized citizen ID authentication; better access to services; and improved budget and physical resource planning and management ”played out in the low-code framework, the effects of which could have an impact on other companies that interact with the public sector.
Retail, which has traditionally been a personal experience, has been digitized, largely due to the pandemic. Developing the right software can be time-consuming and costly, however, some retailers use low-code to develop things like digital purchasing, allowing them to adapt faster and stay competitive.
“The way we conduct our business has changed dramatically in the past two years,” noted Tim Srock, CEO of Mendix. “Now it is absolutely crucial to digitize operations and connect with customers and employees using different methods and touchpoints.” Overall, low-code and no-code solutions enabled the development of well-established companies and younger companies to enter the table, a key step in times of economic pressure.
